Frequently Asked Questions
What is drywall?
Drywall is a man-made material used for insulation in modern buildings. It’s used to cover the framing on interior walls and ceilings, and is a great low-cost and low-maintenance choice for interior walls. Basically, it’s a layer of gypsum plaster in between two other layers of paper. These layers are bonded together to form a rigid, solid sheet.
What is gypsum board?
“Gypsum board” is another term for drywall. Gypsum itself is a natural mineral material that bonds into a solid mass after being mixed with water. It makes for a strong and durable building material. It is sometimes also known as sheetrock or gyprock.
When was drywall invented?
Drywall was invented in 1916 by the United States Gypsum Corporation. It was designed as a cost- and labor-saving alternative to plaster walls, and caught on fast. Most modern buildings use drywall as opposed to plaster, due to its convenience and durability.

How long does drywall mud take to dry? How long should I wait before painting a repaired area?
Generally, drywall mud should take about 24 hours (one day) to dry fully. Weather conditions can impact these times, however, and particularly cold rooms should take longer to dry. After we finish installing your drywall, we will provide you with an estimate of when it will be safe to sand, prime, and paint.
